Delicious Buttermilk Scones At Home

INGREDIENTS:

MAKES 15 
  • 200g/7oz/1¾ cups plain (all-purpose) flour
  • 5ml/1 tsp salt 
  • 5ml/1 tsp baking powder 
  • 2.5ml/½ tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) 
  • 60ml/4 tablespoon cold butter or margarine 
  • 175ml/6fl oz/¾ cup buttermilk 

STEPS: 

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/ Gas 7. Grease and flour a baking sheet. 
  2. Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl. Rub in the butter or margarine with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. 
  3. Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring with a fork to form a soft dough. 
  4. Roll out the dough to about 1cm/½in thick. Stamp out rounds with a 5cm/2in biscuit (cookie) cutter.  
  5. Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake until golden, 12–15 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.
