INGREDIENTS:

- 200g/7oz/1¾ cups plain (all-purpose) flour
- 5ml/1 tsp salt
- 5ml/1 tsp baking powder
- 2.5ml/½ tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
- 60ml/4 tablespoon cold butter or margarine
- 175ml/6fl oz/¾ cup buttermilk
STEPS:
- Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/ Gas 7. Grease and flour a baking sheet.
- Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl. Rub in the butter or margarine with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring with a fork to form a soft dough.
- Roll out the dough to about 1cm/½in thick. Stamp out rounds with a 5cm/2in biscuit (cookie) cutter.
- Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake until golden, 12–15 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.
